Shreevallabh, Amit, and I were eating breakfast at the Sangeetha Restaurant in Chennai, near the Adyar crossing. We planned a trip to Mahabalipuram to mark the end of our first week as IT professionals. It was the first Saturday after we started our first job. We were going with six people, including Sushil, Abhijit, and Samiraj, who would join us at the bus stop. The only issue was that Sushil had just awoken five minutes earlier. We took turns calling and texting him over our breakfast to make sure he didn't fall asleep again and got to us as quickly as possible, all the while blatantly lying about our progress. So, as soon as we got to the bus stop, he joined us. We boarded a bus and headed toward Mahabalipuram because Abhijit and Samiraj were already there.

We arrived quickly at Mahabalipuram, which is just 60 kilometers from Chennai. Because we were all sleeping the majority of the time, the journey probably also appeared to be short and uneventful. We first stopped at a store when we got there so that Sushil, who hadn't eaten breakfast, could get something to eat. Then, we went to see the five massive "Rathas," or miniature temple models built by the Pallava emperors primarily between the 7th and 9th centuries.

We went to the lighthouse and the cave temple of Mahishasurmardini after seeing the Rathas. Two lighthouses exist: a modern one with a powerful electric beam and a medieval one that used fire as a signal. We could see the shore beyond the cliffs and boulders that dotted the terrain from the top of the old lighthouse. The Kalpakkam nuclear power plant was barely visible when one looked out to the horizon. It is not allowed to scale the modern lighthouse.

After enjoying each a Kakri, a fruit resembling a serpent, and engaging in a violent argument with the elderly woman who was selling them, we moved on to the other attractions. We had been pestered by men selling tiny statues, and one of them had almost convinced Sushil to buy his goods by lowering the price from Rs. 50 to Rs. 15, but we eventually decided that even Rs. 15 was too much and left.

The next location was full of hillocks and rock formations that looked like caves. Krishna's Butterball, a massive round rock perched precariously atop an inclined rocky hillside, is the main draw here. We all climbed the hill to pose under the round rock after I gave my camera to another tourist. It was fun, but I have to admit that it was also a little bit scary. We would resemble pancakes in Tom & Jerry if that rock suddenly made the decision to fall. However, the rock continued to behave exactly as it had for thousands of years, and we were able to descend again without incident. Unfortunately, the camera was returned to me with the film compartment door slightly ajar when the man returned it to me. Both the following two frames and our final image were damaged.

After that, we went to the "Arjuna's Penance" carved rock. It is a massive rock that has been sculpted with numerous figures and is located by the roadside. Arjuna, a hero from the epic Mahabharata, is depicted doing penance in this image. We decided to eat lunch at a typical Tamil restaurant because it was lunchtime and we felt like we were doing our own penance.

Naturally, the food was typical of Tamil. Sambhar, chutney, and papad of five different varieties were served alongside the rice. Curd, buttermilk, a sweet, and other things I've forgotten were also present. On banana leaves, the rice was served. The flavor was pleasant, but when you eat five varieties of sambhar at once, you don't care about the flavor.

We walked to the shore Temple after lunch. In Mahabalipuram, this is the only historical temple that is not monolithic. Due to corrosion from seawater, wind, and sand, it is directly on the beach and in poor condition. It was fortunate that the December 2004 tsunami did not cause any damage. By this time, our legs were very worn out, so we just sat down and talked for a very, very long time. We just wanted to sleep because our stomachs were full and the wind was intoxicating. However, we needed to finish another important task: something that we had been carrying our clothes in preparation for since the morning.

Neither was the beach empty nor overcrowded. It was less polluted than Chennai's beaches. When we got there, the sky had become cloudy. After picking a dry spot close to the water, we changed into our bathing suits. After that, we took a swim in the ocean. We took a bath in water up to our waists because none of us knew how to swim properly. I can't say I enjoyed it very much because it was my first and only sea bathing experience. First, I kept getting salt water in my mouth. Second, it hurt a lot because the salt water kept getting in my eyes. Thirdly, the water brought sand into my eyes and mouth as well. Most importantly, I was slammed to the ground repeatedly by quite powerful waves. It scared me because I don't know how to swim and I left my glasses on the shore. We changed on the beach after we finished our bath. This was a huge error. We should have started with a rocky spot. I don't know about other people, but the sand on the beach got on my wet feet. From there, it got inside my clothes and reached every part of my body, making me feel like I was wearing a sandpaper suit. When I got to my house, I was roughed up. Our suffering did not end there. We found that washing those clothes was more difficult than we had anticipated, so Amit and I alternated rinsing them multiple times to remove the sand grains.

In any case, after we got dressed, Shreevallabh rode a horse with us, and then we went shopping for souvenirs. Stone figures and exquisite seashells were present. Due to the presence of foreign tourists, the prices were exorbitant. We made a few small purchases before arriving at the bus stop. After touring a functional temple instead of a historical ruin there, we boarded a bus for Chennai. The journey back was unpleasant. I slept for a while, and when I awoke, the bus was so full that there was nowhere to even stand. We somehow made it to our stop and tiredly went home.

As a result, our first trip out of Chennai to Mahabalipuram Tour Package was a huge success that helped us all grow closer together to this day. We were a group of six complete strangers before the trip, and each of us only knew one other person in the group. After the trip, we were six friends who participated in the majority of our time in Chennai's activities together. The other trip we planned to take during our two-month stay didn't go as planned, but I'll tell you about that later.
