Descent of the Ganges is a massive pink granite open-air bas-relief that is also known as Arjuna's Penance. Indian epics like the Mahabharata are told through the dramatic relief sculpture. However, nearby mandapas, particularly the Krishna Mandapa, depict pastoral scenes surrounded by mythical figures. Unknown circumstances have prevented the completion of other nearby rock artworks that are comparable.
The Mahabharata's five Pandava brothers, Yudhistir, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva, as well as their wife Draupadi, are honored in the architectural ode to Pancha Ratha, or "five chariots." Each ratha differs significantly from the others in terms of theme and structure, but they were all carved from a long stone or monolith. Their shapes range from square to apsidal, spread out over one to three stories. Bas-reliefs and murals are used to decorate the walls of these ancient structures. The building is adorned with a bull and an elephant, both of which are magnificently carved monoliths. Despite their initial purpose as places of worship, these were never actively used for any sacred rites or consecrated.
According to local lore, the Shore Temple is the only surviving structure of the fabled Seven Pagodas and can be found on the beach. Chennai To Mahabalipuram Tour Package The Shore Temple maintains its beauty in many areas despite the persistent erosion caused by the salty, humid air of the sea. This is, in fact, a remnant of a larger complex of temples and civil structures, the majority of which are now submerged in the ocean, and it was constructed between 700 and 728 CE during the reign of Narasimhavarman II.
The position of this five-story structure means that Shiva, the temple's head deity, receives the first rays of the rising sun. A barrel-vaulted gopuram, or gate, welcomes visitors to the property. The actual shrine's shikhara, or roof, resembles a pyramid. This, like other impressive structures at Mahabalipuram, has intricate bas-relief decorations. Additionally, the temple complex is littered with massive sculptures. More contact at Chennai To Mahabalipuram Car Package.
The Olakkanneshvara Temple, which resembles Shiva's third eye and is also referred to as the Olakkanatha Temple, was constructed around the same time as the Shore Temple. This is situated on a slope some separation away from the ocean side which brought forth a conviction that it went about as a beacon in prior times. This is built on top of the Mahishasuramardini Cave as well, but the two are distinct buildings that were built at different times.
